Once we are instructed not to think of an elephant, it becomes hard—impossible, actually—to chase the elephant from our mind. At least, it's hard until we stop thinking about the instruction altogether and allow our mind to move on to other topics. But as soon as the instruction floats back into consciousness, there's that elephant again, looming large. And not just an elephant, but a wide range of associated ideas an elephant might trigger, such as other exotic animals—perhaps lions or hippos—images of Africa, thoughts about the circus or even of the GOP.

Our limits lie in our thinking. You need to root them out and rework them. A lack of self-belief will fundamentally change how you direct your actions...across all facets of your life. The person who thinks they "might not be capable" of being the next CTO will fill themselves with anxiety and be less likely to take any chances, even if they get there. Chances that might showcase their talents and make them outstanding in their work.
