The Philips brothers, more than a century ago, started an innovation lab so they could diversify their portfolio by developing new products and technologies. That lab started the company on the path to medical technology. By continuing to diversify its portfolio of products, it could quit opportunities of lesser quality, including its core lighting business, and move into the better ones it had discovered along the way.
