A 'scientific method' for the testing of theories was developed that, wrote one scholar, 'teaches men humility and acquaints them with their own errors and so removes all overweening haughtiness of mind'. Strict standards would be applied to these experiments: there should be unbiased analysis of data; accurate records kept; they should be reproducible; results should be published.
