2. Alternatives This step in the positioning narrative is all about helping customers make sense of their alternatives and the trade-offs associated with each. New start-ups often fall into a common trap of believing that because their solution is new or located in an emerging market space, there is no competition. But there is always an alternative way to accomplish what your solution does, even if that alternative is manual processes and Excel spreadsheets. The key here is to understand what a customer sees as an alternative to your solution, not what you would necessarily consider a direct competitor.
