Republic of Letters As the dreams of the virtuosi spread downwards from the nobility towards a broader expanse of intellectuals, a significant status game formed around new and useful knowledge. Named by the Venetian statesman and thinker Francesco Barbaro as the Respublica Literaria, or Republic of Letters, this game was made possible by the postal system that had been established across much of Western Europe.
