A note from Daniel

Surveys and interviews don't collect the same kind of data. Surveys are good only when you know what questions to ask, and can suggest the right answers. They're great for confirming a choice between a limited set of options (e.g. A vs. B). Interviews are significantly better for exploration. They can help you map the situation and decision-making process of prospects. They can help you capture stories, tasks, and mental models, which is what you're really after early on.
