A 2019 study of over four hundred societies in thirty regions, spanning more than a thousand years, found moralising gods 'consistently' appeared after a population had reached one million. Belief in moralising gods created a standard set of rules and symbols by which players of different languages, ethnicities and cultural backgrounds could play. And they believed them. They lived the dream of reality they'd been sold.
