Retail was their identity. If they had held on to the financial services assets and shuttered or sold the retail company, they would have, in some sense, ceased to be Sears, at least the Sears that everyone knew them as. That's the choice that they faced. When it comes to quitting, the most painful thing to quit is who you are.
