In these large-scale communities, standards and self-governance can't be maintained by people simply running around and talking to each other. Instead, the builders of these networked products must create features that nudge the interactions in the right direction. Reddit's upvotes and downvotes encourage funny, detailed comments. Google Calendar's "working hours" feature encourages people to be considerate of their colleagues in other time zones. The ability to report a Twitter user's account as hacked means it can be flagged for review.
