If you consume the news, you run the risk of using it as the basis of your decision-making, even if it has virtually nothing to do with the matter at hand. This can happen quite subconsciously: you may be listening to news about a plane crash on the other side of the world, for instance, then the following day you get the opportunity to fly to London and seal a potential deal. You don't get on the plane and so the meeting falls through, even though the crash on the news had nothing to do with your flight to London.
