The clock helped the people optimize their time by reminding them of the pace at which it was passing. Now, humans could know how much time they were spending on any particular activity. Instead of, say, the question of farming wheat versus cows being evaluated solely on survival measures, with the advent of clock time it was possible to measure precisely how long each activity took and to compare the time investment involved with the outputs produced.
