A note from Daniel

Layering on growth from faraway geographies is far harder. This usually requires the team to start their network from zero once again, on top of all of the additional work: localizing content, finding local partners, implementing new payment methods, and potentially iterating on the product concept itself because sometimes the idea doesn't fully translate. Unless your product is the rare type that possesses the global network effects of Airbnb, each new major geography is likely to take a big effort to kick-start--it's the Cold Start Problem all over again.
