Regional expansion is easier when networks grow into directly adjacent networks. When a hyperlocal network that's primarily centered in San Francisco wants to expand into a nearby city, like Los Angeles, that often works well because both markets will share users. A product like Tinder might have users that have moved between cities. Similarly OpenTable might be able to leverage the fact that some restaurant chains are regional the same owners may have locations in both San Francisco and LA, so it becomes easier to launch a new nearby market.
