Why Can't I Focus While Reading Anymore? (Phone Brain, Explained)
You read the same paragraph four times and remember none of it. What the research really says about phones, attention and reading, and how to get focus back.
TL;DR: You are not broken and your attention span is not eight seconds (that stat is folklore). What changed is your environment. Screen-use logs show people now switch tasks every 47 seconds, and each switch leaves “attention residue” behind, which makes reading, the one activity that needs many unbroken minutes, the first thing to fall apart. The evidence that this is reversible is decent: a 2025 randomized trial found two weeks without mobile internet measurably improved sustained attention. The practical fix is boring and it works: one book, a timer, and the phone in another room.
You sit down with the book. You read a paragraph. Somewhere around the third sentence you realize you have taken in none of it, and you have no idea when you stopped. So you read it again. Then your hand reaches for a phone that has not made a sound.
This is the most common complaint readers have right now, and it deserves a real answer rather than a lecture about willpower. Here is what the research actually shows, including the parts where it is weaker than people claim.
First, let’s retire the goldfish
You have seen the claim: humans now have an eight-second attention span, shorter than a goldfish. It is everywhere, and it is not real. As The Well by Northwell documented, the number came from a 2015 Microsoft Canada marketing report that in turn credited a data aggregator, and when the BBC tried to trace it to any actual study, there was nothing at the end of the chain. Microsoft later pulled the report. No peer-reviewed research supports it, and nobody has measured a goldfish’s attention span either.
That matters, because “my attention span is eight seconds” is a story about damage. The real research tells a story about environment, which is far more useful, because environments can be changed.
What actually changed
Your screen day is measured in seconds
Gloria Mark, a professor of informatics at UC Irvine, has spent two decades logging how long people stay on one screen before switching. Her findings, summarized in her book Attention Span and in an APA interview, are stark: in 2004 the average was about two and a half minutes. In recent years it has settled around 47 seconds, with a median near 40. This is not survey self-report. It is software logging what people actually do.
Now hold that next to a book. A single page of a novel takes most adults one to two minutes. If your default rhythm is a switch every 47 seconds, a page is already longer than your habit allows. You are asking your attention to do something it has not practiced in years.
Every switch leaves residue
Sophie Leroy, a business professor at the University of Washington, gave the mechanism a name in her 2009 paper in Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes: attention residue. Her definition is “the persistence of cognitive activity about a Task A even though one stopped working on Task A and currently performs a Task B.”
In her experiments, people who switched away from an unfinished task performed worse on the next one. The residue was worst when the abandoned task was unresolved or emotionally charged, which is a precise description of a half-read group chat or an argument on a social feed. You put the phone down, you open the book, and a portion of your mind is still back there. The words go in. Nothing sticks.
Mark’s earlier field studies point the same way: in her CHI 2005 observation of information workers, interrupted tasks were typically resumed only after passing through two other tasks and roughly 20 to 25 minutes.
The notification does not need to be answered
This is the finding that surprises people. Cary Stothart, Ainsley Mitchum and Courtney Yehnert ran an experiment published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance in 2015, The Attentional Cost of Receiving a Cell Phone Notification. Participants did an attention-demanding task while their phone, which they never touched, occasionally buzzed. Errors went up anyway.
The buzz does not steal your attention by making you look. It steals it by starting a thought. Which means “I’ll just leave it face down” is not the safeguard you think it is.
Even a silent phone costs something (probably)
Adrian Ward, Kristen Duke, Ayelet Gneezy and Maarten Bos tested a stronger claim in Brain Drain (2017): that merely having your phone in the room eats working memory, even switched off. Nearly 800 participants did better on cognitive tests with the phone in another room than with it on the desk.
Be careful with this one. Replications have been mixed, and a 2023 meta-analysis by Böttger, Poschik and Zierer in Behavioral Sciences pooled 22 studies and found the overall effect real but small (g = -0.14), driven mostly by memory rather than attention. So: a modest, contested effect, not a magic spell. The practical advice survives anyway, because the notification finding above is much more robust.
Why reading takes the hit first
Reading is unusually fragile among the things you do with your attention. Three lines of evidence explain why.
Mind wandering wrecks comprehension specifically. A 2022 meta-analysis by Bonifacci and colleagues in Psychonomic Bulletin & Review pooled 73 correlations and found mind wandering negatively related to reading comprehension (r = -0.21). Crucially, the effect showed up when researchers probed people in the moment (“were you just zoning out?”) and largely vanished with questionnaires, which tells you the problem is real-time drift, not personality. You do not need a distraction to fail. You need only to leave.
The medium matters, a bit. The most cited comparison is Delgado, Vargas, Ackerman and Salmerón (2018) in Educational Research Review, a meta-analysis of 54 studies and 171,055 participants. Paper beat screens for comprehension by a small margin (g = -0.21). The moderators are the interesting part: the paper advantage showed up for informational texts and under time pressure, and not for narrative texts read at leisure. So a novel on an e-reader is mostly fine. A dense article on the device that also holds your email is not.
The “shallowing” question. Researchers including Ladislao Salmerón argue that heavy digital media use trains a mindset of fast, reward-driven skimming that transfers badly to deep reading. A 2025 meta-analysis by Altamura, Vargas and Salmerón in Review of Educational Research covering 469,564 participants found leisure digital reading barely related to comprehension (r = .055), far weaker than the long-established link for print reading.
Honesty check: that last body of work is correlational. It cannot tell you whether scrolling degrades comprehension or whether people who comprehend less prefer scrolling. And the field’s most famous claim, Ophir, Nass and Wagner’s 2009 finding that heavy media multitaskers have worse cognitive control, has had a rocky replication history. Treat “the internet rewired my brain” as a plausible hypothesis, not a settled fact.
The genuinely good news
If attention were permanently damaged, nothing would help. It does.
In February 2025, Noah Castelo, Kostadin Kushlev, Adrian Ward, Michael Esterman and Peter Reiner published a randomized trial in PNAS Nexus: blocking mobile internet on smartphones improves sustained attention, mental health, and subjective well-being. They gave 467 adults an app that blocked mobile internet (calls and texts still worked) for two weeks. Daily phone use fell from about 314 minutes to 161. Sustained attention, measured on a demanding lab task, improved with an effect size of 0.24, and 91% of participants improved on at least one of the three outcomes.
Two weeks. A modest effect, in a sample of volunteers who wanted this to work, so do not oversell it to yourself. But it points the right direction: attention responds to what you feed it, on a timescale of weeks.

How to focus while reading: the short protocol
- One book, one session. Reading three books in rotation sounds sophisticated. When your focus is shaky it just multiplies the switching cost. Pick one.
- Put the phone out of arm’s reach. Not off. Not face down. In another room, so retrieving it requires standing up. This is the highest-leverage change on the list.
- Set a timer and read to the timer, not to the page count. A timer converts an open-ended, unwinnable task (“finish the book”) into a closed one (“sit here for 15 minutes”). Attention behaves much better inside a container.

- Take a transition, not a jump cut. Leroy’s own suggestion is that even 30 to 60 seconds of deliberate closure before switching reduces the residue. Close the app, put the phone down, wait a beat, then open the book.
- Make it the same time every day. Consistency is what turns a decision into a default. This is the whole logic behind reading streaks: the streak is not the point, the daily slot is.
